On 5 Sep 2026, Quantum Foundry Copenhagen, owned by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, is building a 5,300 m² quantum chip fab in the Danish capital. Opens 2027. ~$62m (Bloomberg). Commercial wafer fab for quantum companies globally: nanofabrication, characterisation, testing, assembly, packaging, UHV. Foundation quantum spend now >DKK 2.9bn (~€390m). Henna Virkkunen at the launch: European manufacture of quantum chips is "essential for… technological sovereignty."

Why it matters: Europe keeps funding quantum papers. Denmark just funded the factory under the papers. The missing piece was a commercial foundry, not another lab. Edition candidate.

BraveTech EU DefTech forges applications close tomorrow, 6 sep. TRL 4+ defence/dual-use from UA + EU. 40 teams → forges 9-13 nov in Germany and Romania → six €120k winners → path to EDA testing and up to €750k. Five challenges: multi-mode missile/UAV guidance, autonomous strike UAVs, modular payloads, sensors, EW-resistant flight controllers. EC + Brave1 + EDA.

Why it matters: The clock is measured in hours. Battlefield-shaped money with a date on it.

Sivers Semiconductors (Stockholm-listed) is putting $30m into its Glasgow indium phosphide plant for AI datacenter optics. Program starts H2 2026, live Q4 2027. Target: >100 million cw dfb lasers a year. Hybrid model: Glasgow in-house plus Asian foundry partners.

Why it matters: Yesterday Valencia's optical switch raised $125m. Today Scotland is scaling the lasers those racks eat. Europe's photonics stack is getting real capacity, not just decks.

From Ken Huang's Substack (4 sep): OpenAI's unreleased Astra is the first model the lab has rated critical for cybersecurity. Company says it can find and build functional zero-days against hardened systems unassisted; cannot rule out full unguided attack chains. Evidence cited: perfect ExploitBench; two uncatalogued V8 vulns chained alone. Jailbreak refusal on cyber attempts 91.5% (vs 59% on GPT-5.6 Sol). Cyber capability ships gated. Numbers are theirs.

Why it matters: Brussels already opened AI Act RFIs and cyber talks with OpenAI. Critical is a new tier, not a press adjective. Europe's oversight question just got sharper.
