ctg. morning brief, 6 sep 2026
On 6 Sep 2026, Near Munich, Auterion and Ukrainian partner Airlogix have started serial production of more than 5,000 AI-guided strike drones for Ukraine under a German government contract worth about €300m (Handelsblatt / industry sources). First airframes are already off the line. Models: medium-range Seth-X and long-range Anubis (up to 1,500 km). Auterion software + OS, Airlogix airframes. Second plant planned in eastern Germany. Full order through mid-2027. Auterion CEO Lorenz Meier: Germany now has a production line for affordable precision mass.
Why it matters: Speeches invent stockpiles. A Bavarian line invents them. Europe's first industrial answer to attritable deep strike is rolling. Edition candidate.

European defence officials are pushing back on the Commission's Cloud and AI Development Act (CADA), warning that hard curbs on US cloud could weaken military capability and NATO interoperability before EU alternatives exist (Defence Matters, Sep 4; FT reporting). CADA sets four assurance tiers; the top tier demands full EU control. F-35 support ecosystems are the concrete example. Loudest resistance: eastern and Nordic states. Officials cite an 8-10 year US lead in defence cloud/AI platforms.
Why it matters: Sovereignty without a stack is a readiness tax. Brussels is writing the rule while the flank is writing the threat.

EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance holds its inaugural meeting in Brussels on 11 sep. Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius attending. 19 contractors named so far, including Quantum Systems, Indra, Destinus, WB Group on the EU side and Athlon Avia, Skyfall, UFORCE and others on the Ukrainian side. Stocktaking + timeline, not a cheque ceremony yet (Euractiv via Kyiv Post).
Why it matters: Von der Leyen's drone alliance finally gets a room and a date. The question is whether it ships airframes or slides.

Lithuania's defence ministry awarded a ~€5m state contract for an integrated AI airspace surveillance system to detect and warn on drones (LRT / Kyiv Post, 5 sep). Pilot early 2027; full domestic sensor integration 2027; NATO platform hookup 2028. Trigger context: Aug Latvian airspace drone shoot-down and Baltic false-flag warnings.
Why it matters: Cheap drones forced a Baltic capital to buy a shared picture, not another speech. Small cheque, correct bottleneck.
