On 25 Sep 2026, Berlin's STARK says the first Virtus loitering-munition tranche for the Bundeswehr is about to ship: a €275m charge under a €2.9bn framework (about €1bn already Bundestag-cleared), per SVP Josef Kranawetvogl at Eudex Essen (dpa, 23 Sep). First systems go to Brigade 45 in Lithuania for a November NATO exercise (inert warheads in training). Virtus: VTOL, about 130 km range, about 75 min endurance per dpa, unit price under €100k; company cites about 750 staff plus Ukraine and EU plants. Helsing and Rheinmetall also hold billion-euro frames in the same German loitering buy.
Why it matters: Framework ink is cheap. A funded first tranche heading to the eastern flank is serial production, not a slide. Europe's loitering magazine starts filling when airframes leave the factory.

At UNGA, Zelenskyy pitched Freyja: Ukraine plus nine European states (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, UK, Spain, Netherlands; Poland invited) building ballistic-missile defence at greater scale and lower cost than Patriot/SAMP/T waitlists (defence-industry.eu, 25 Sep). He said Russia fired more than 950 ballistic missiles at Ukraine in the first eight months of 2026, part of more than 2,100 missiles total. Lead developer Fire Point (FP-7.x); program does not replace Patriot or upgraded SAMP/T, it aims to fill the magazine Europe cannot buy fast enough.
Why it matters: Europe's interceptor shortage is industrial, not rhetorical. Open-architecture ABM that can actually be produced is the decision Europe has to make. Edition candidate: cheap serial ballistic defence vs waiting lists.

Hamburg growth investor DTCP announced the first close of DTCP Defence Fund I at €455m toward a €500m target (company, 24 Sep). Anchor LPs include Deutsche Telekom, Porsche SE, Denmark's EIFO, Danica, and SmartCap. Dedicated defence team already invested in Norway's Six Robotics (autonomy orchestration) and the UK's Kraken Technology Group (uncrewed maritime); a third deal is underway. Mandate: Series B and later, Europe-first, NATO-aligned AI, autonomy, cyber, secure comms, and space. DTCP AUM about €5bn; Copenhagen office planned 2027. Prior defence book includes Quantum Systems and STARK.
Why it matters: Europe's defence Series B gap is still real. When Telco, auto, and Nordic state capital underwrite the same growth book, serialisers get a domestic chequebook instead of a US tour.

Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (Fincantieri 51% / Leonardo 49%) signed about €3.7bn with OCCAR for two Italian Navy DDX destroyers, plus about €1.3bn in options (defence-industry.eu / companies, 24 Sep). Subcontracts expected: about €1.8bn to Fincantieri (incl. €800m options) and about €1.7bn to Leonardo (incl. €480m options). Ships: 180 m, 13,500 t, crew 251, range 4,000 nm; first delivery 2033, second 2035. Combat system aimed at ballistic and hypersonic air/missile defence plus unmanned surface/underwater vehicle control.
Why it matters: Prime industrial order, not a pitch deck. Italy is buying the magazine and the radar stack for the next two decades of Mediterranean and NATO air defence.
