ctg. morning brief, 3 Oct 2026

On 3 Oct 2026, Diehl Defence and Germany's BAAINBw signed a contract (2 Oct) to adapt IRIS-T SLM for the Navy's four F125 frigates: prototypes plus comprehensive test firings to make the Ukraine-proven land air-defence system mission-capable at sea. A 2025 demonstrator on Baden-Württemberg went concept-to-firing in under 10 months and fired three live missiles off Andøya. TWZ reports each ship gets two launchers of 16 cells (32 missiles). Bundestag Budget Committee greenlit the maritime adaptation on 23 Sep.

Why it matters: Product flip, not a white paper. Land combat AD moving onto a class that had almost no medium-range umbrella. Serial path for a European missile line.

Osavul raised €8.5m Series A led by 33N Ventures, with Balnord, G+D Ventures and existing 42CAP (Tech.eu, 1 Oct). Total funding ~€12m. Luxembourg-based, Ukrainian founders; AI platform flags hostile cyber/physical/disinfo activity before it escalates. Already used by NATO and governments; expanding enterprise (energy, airports, ports, finance).

Why it matters: NATO-customer AI with a live hybrid-threat brief. Money that scales detection, not another awareness campaign.

Munich SE3 Labs emerged with €5.5m seed led by Lakestar (Seedcamp, EWOR, Sequoia Scout, UnternehmerTUM, others; Defence Deals, 1 Oct) for spatial AI that builds shared 3D maps for drones and autonomous systems in GPS-denied environments. Already used by the Bundeswehr in European exercises; HENSOLDT MoU; Auterion exploring embed.

Why it matters: Autonomy stack with a German customer and primes circling. Spatial AI is the layer that turns drones into a fleet, not toys.

Ireland ordered four Thales GM400 Alpha long-range radars (up to 515 km) and one GM200 MM/A (up to 350 km, 15-minute deploy) via France's DGA (Thales/Janes, 2 Oct). Five deployable systems total; initial deliveries 2027, full recognised air picture by end-2028. DoD acquisition order with DGA was signed 18 Sep.

Why it matters: Neutral Ireland buying a complete air picture through a French procurement channel. Sensors first, then the politics catch up.

KONGSBERG signed with Oshkosh Defense Europe to put PROTECTOR RS4 remote weapon stations with PROTECTOR CUAS on Dutch JLTVs for the Royal Netherlands Armed Forces (company, 29 Sep; coverage into early Oct). Detect, track, identify, neutralize drones; quantities and value undisclosed. PROTECTOR RS4 already in service with 31 nations.

Why it matters: Counter-drone on the vehicle that actually moves with the force. Serial CUAS bolted onto a NATO fleet platform.
