ctg. morning brief, 4 Oct 2026
On 4 Oct 2026, Naval Group cut first steel for HSwMS Luleå, lead ship of Sweden's four FDI frigates, at Lorient on 1 Oct, one month after the 31 Aug contract. First delivery 2030 (then 2032-2034). Naval News and Naval Group put the programme at about €4.3bn / ~SEK 47bn for four ships; the FDI line is sized for two hulls a year, with 13 ordered so far for France, Greece and Sweden. Swedish fit includes Saab Giraffe 1X, RBS15, Torped 47, Bofors guns, plus Aster 30 and CAMM-ER.
Why it matters: Serial production, not a render. A Baltic navy trading domestic build risk for a live European line that already delivers two frigates a year.

Germany's defence ministry confirmed (Fri 2 Oct) that Helsing and STARK Defence attack-drone systems have reached comparable qualification milestones, with only minor work left. Bundeswehr training starts in November; first deliveries go to a German tank brigade in Lithuania. Parliament this year approved orders of about €270m each, with flexibility if milestones slipped.
Why it matters: Product flip on the eastern flank. Qualification cleared, training dated, Lithuania brigade as the first customer unit.

Romania and Poland signed a Letter of Intent in Bucharest (30 Sep; reported 1 Oct) for a Polish-led SAFE procurement of 70 loitering munition systems for Romanian land and naval forces, priced at €147m ex-VAT. Manufacturer not named yet (WB Group/GLADIUS-Romaero have positioned earlier; not selected in the LOI). Part of Romania's ~€9.6bn / 21-project SAFE stack, 10 of them joint.
Why it matters: Joint SAFE money into a named quantity of strike munitions. Industrial winner still open, but the buy is real.

Certo Aerospace raised £5m (FlightGlobal / Startup Mag, 1-2 Oct) to industrialise Capstone, its coaxial heavy-lift UAS (BAE figures cited up to ~280kg / ~10h / ~300 miles). Contender for UK Project Nyx / BAE FalconWorks path with IOC target around 2030. Capital aimed at production-ready kit and certification, not another demo.
Why it matters: UK hardware raise pointed at serial manufacturing. Heavy-lift autonomy that has to survive certification, not a slide.

European Defence Fund 2026 calls drew a record 612 proposals (+49% YoY) for a €1.006bn envelope (Commission, 2 Oct). Half the pot aims to mature prior EDF work into prototypes (endo-atmospheric interceptor, next-gen MBT, MLRS, semi-autonomous naval). ~€60m disruptive; Ukrainian applicants eligible for the first time; awards expected ~Mar 2027.
Why it matters: Hard demand signal that European primes and SMEs are lining up for production-adjacent collaborative R&D. Numbers, not a white paper.
