On 7 Oct 2026, Mistral put Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, into public preview (6 Oct): 1 trillion parameters, 49 billion active, natively multimodal, trained from scratch on 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral's own European datacenters. Weights drop by the end of October. Mistral says it scores 82% on the Artificial Analysis reproduce-and-patch vulnerability test, the highest of any model, and solves 93% of Cybench. It is the first milestone funded by the €3bn Series D.
Why it matters: A European lab back at the open-weight frontier, trained and served on European compute, with weights anyone can download this month. Cyber is the wedge: Mistral says Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra score near zero on that patch test because they refuse it. Benchmarks are Mistral's own until the weights land. Then the excuses for not going sovereign run out.

Covenant opened its Leipzig factory on Mon 5 Oct: more than 10,000 m² to build Anthem, a long-range strike weapon with a 200+ kg payload, for NATO allies. Less than 5% of components in the Leipzig-built version come from outside Europe, and the goal is zero. Target: 5,000 missiles a year in Leipzig during 2028. About $150m in orders booked so far, including a first European contract (Ctech, 6 Oct).
Why it matters: Last month Covenant was a stealth reveal with a Saxony line on the calendar. Now it is a building, with the German Army chief at the opening. Cheap deep strike made in Europe from European parts. The $250m+ behind it comes from a16z, Founders Fund, Lux and others, so Europe gets the factory and the jobs, not the cap table.

Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions started SAR satellite production in Neuss (6 Oct), less than a year after the Bundeswehr signed SPOCK 1. Rheinmetall says the aim is several dozen satellites a year; dpa puts it at around 50, with the first launch in early 2027 on a SpaceX rocket, under a multi-year €1.7bn contract. The Bundeswehr already has exclusive access to several dedicated radar satellites, used first for the brigade in Lithuania and NATO's eastern flank.
Why it matters: Contract to production line in under a year is the speed rearmament needs. Germany now builds its own all-weather eyes on the Rhine, with Finnish radar know-how inside. The gap left to close is launch.

Amsterdam's Hadrian raised $40m co-led by Forgepoint Capital International and SmartFin, with HV Capital, Motive Partners, Picus Capital and Oetker Ventures following on. Total raised: $65m. Its AI agents map a company's external attack surface and run continuous penetration tests. Customers include TotalEnergies, Amadeus and Damen Shipyard. The money goes into EMEA and US expansion and engineering.
Why it matters: Same day as Le Chonk, same thesis: attackers already use AI, so defenders need agents that are allowed to attack. A Dutch company selling that into the US, not the other way round.

Ukrainian drone maker Airlogix has opened production in the UK, Oleksandr Kamyshin said at the Resilience Conference in London (6 Oct). It already builds in Germany through its joint venture with Auterion and is pursuing Canada, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and the US. Kamyshin's numbers: in the first year of the full-scale war, Ukraine's whole industry built 2,000 drones. Today a single company can build 5,000 a day.
Why it matters: Russian strikes on its plants pushed Airlogix to spread production out, and Europe gets the lines. Ukraine's defence industry is integrating west, one factory at a time.
