ctg. morning brief, 13 Oct 2026

On 13 Oct 2026, Airbus and Kratos flew the U740 Valkyrie for the first time in Europe (12 Oct): a collaborative combat aircraft aimed at German and other European air forces, with a combat-ready target of 2029.

Why it matters: Runway-independent rocket-assisted take-off, speeds up to Mach 0.8, range past 5,000 km, about three tonnes class. Airbus's MARS mission system is the European brain on a proven Kratos airframe. Affordable combat mass stops being a slide when the first European flight sticks.

Shield AI and Greece's GEK TERNA signed an MoU (8 Oct) to pursue X-BAT parts production, integration and sustainment in Greece. The same day Shield said public and private X-BAT funding commitments reached $400m.

Why it matters: Not a Hellenic order yet. It is a runway-free AI strike fighter pitched as a regional industrial hub for the Aegean and Balkans. The edition question is whether workshare and facilities harden before flight tests finish.

French HyLight raised €13m (12 Oct) to grow its hydrogen-electric inspection airships from four aircraft toward a fleet of up to 15 operated in 2027, hiring about 50 people.

Why it matters: Already flying for Enedis, SNCF Réseau and gas operators under DGAC and EASA BVLOS approvals. Grid inspection still means helicopters. Serial airships plus AI defect maps are the product flip.

Danish-Lithuanian Monopulse (MNP Technologijos) raised over €2m (Tech.eu, 12 Oct) to expand production of electronic-warfare-resistant reconnaissance drones already used by the Lithuanian and Danish armed forces.

Why it matters: Small cheque, real customers. Production capacity and Scandinavian expansion matter more than another pitch.
