On 18 Oct 2026, Norway's new Leopard 2A8 tanks are now being built in Norway. Ritek in Levanger started assembly with KNDS Deutschland on 15 Oct: 37 of the Army's 54 tanks come off this line, which KNDS rates at up to 36 tanks a year.

Why it matters: This is serial production in Europe that is not a press release. Ritek, a regional vehicle service shop, put more than NOK 100m into getting ready, holds a KNDS contract worth up to NOK 500m, hired 30 people in a year and expects to hit 100 within six months (Nordic Defence Watch, citing Trønder-Avisa and NRK). Caveat: 36 a year is installed capacity, not a delivery schedule, and KNDS has not said how many Norwegian-built tanks are finished.

Sindlhauser Materials, a small thin-film coatings maker in Kempten, Bavaria, landed on China's export-control list in July next to Rheinmetall and Tatra. It feeds ASML's supply chain, and Brussels is now negotiating a one-for-one delisting swap with Beijing to keep it alive.

Why it matters: David Navrátil's Substack (18 Oct, building on Bloomberg) has the sharp angle: China's critical-minerals export licences make European buyers describe their customers and end use and send photos of the final product, so Europe drew Beijing the map itself. Per Bloomberg, the firm is almost entirely dependent on Chinese rare earths and could run out of runway within months, and any delisting on the EU side needs unanimity. Edition candidate: the chokepoint is not ASML, it is the 35-person supplier nobody in Berlin was watching.

Anduril says it is open to building its new Steelfin air-defence interceptors in Europe, with Poland the obvious partner (AdriaDefense, 17 Oct). Anduril and PGZ's WZL-2 already agreed in July to assemble and then produce Barracuda-500M cruise missiles in Bydgoszcz.

Why it matters: Anduril is targeting several thousand Steelfin interceptors a year at full rate from late 2028 or early 2029, with flight tests starting in 2027. Nothing is signed for Europe. If interceptor volume is the bottleneck, Europe has to decide whether that line is a US startup's factory on its soil or its own.

The NATO Innovation Fund, the €1bn VC backed by 24 Allies, opened a permanent Warsaw branch (13 Oct) and partnered with the Polish Dual-Use Chamber. First hire: Jan Duthel as CEE adoption lead.

Why it matters: Poland's finance minister calls it the first major non-Polish fund to set up a substantial presence in the country. The interesting part is the job description: walking portfolio companies from pilot to procurement contract, which is exactly where European defence startups stall. Tickets stay at €3m to €10m, seed to Series B.
