On 23 Oct 2026, Rheinmetall opened its UK Gun Hall in Telford (22 Oct): 120mm and 155mm barrels for Challenger 3 and future artillery, up to 245 barrels and more than 50 breeches a year at peak, in 11,500 m². Empty building to production in eight months, per Rheinmetall.
Why it matters: Breeches started in May, barrels in June. Britain makes its own large-calibre guns again for the first time in twenty years, per Defence Secretary Wes Streeting. Staff trained in Unterlüß, and Sheffield Forgemasters steel is supposed to come into the line next. Germany just spent more than €2bn on F126 frigates without getting a ship, per ARD via Defense News. Same continent, eight months. Speed is a choice.

At GTC Berlin (21 Oct) Nvidia launched DSX POD: complete Vera Rubin AI factories built in containers at a partner's plant and tested before shipping. Nvidia says that cuts on-site deployment from six months to as little as 14 days, with units shipping worldwide in early 2027.
Why it matters: Read the small print: 14 days once the site's power, cooling and network are ready. The same day Energinet said full grid access for new Danish data centres looks difficult and pointed to flexible or restricted connections, answers due in November, per FemernBusiness. GARBE wants up to 350MW in Nørre Alslev. Bull, Schneider Electric and Vertiv are on the partner list, so Europe gets to build the boxes. Edition candidate: the AI factory now ships in two weeks. The plug still takes years.

Zurich's Enact Intelligence came out of stealth (22 Oct) with a $30m pre-seed, one of Europe's biggest ever, per EU-Startups. redalpine, Notion Capital and firstminute put money in, plus Mistral's Arthur Mensch, Yann LeCun and Hugging Face's Thomas Wolf as angels, per Tech.eu.
Why it matters: The bet: robots that feel force through their own actuators, the way you feel tension in a muscle, not only through fingertip sensors. Founder Manuel Galliker led software for 1X's NEO humanoid and worked at Physical Intelligence. The team of 12 comes from DeepMind, Amazon Robotics, Helsing and ETH, and wants to grow fivefold by end of 2027. Silicon Valley talent moving to Zurich is the good kind of brain drain.

Nvidia used GTC Berlin to pay for more supply chain: about a quarter of Samsung Electro-Mechanics' substrate output by 2028, a tripled Ibiden plant, Amkor packaging up 300%, optics at SPIL up 15x by mid-2027, per The Register. Every name is Asian.
Why it matters: Jensen Huang said it on stage: capacity is the constraint. The European piece of that chain is small and early. Eindhoven's Photon Bridge raised €10m (22 Oct) for multi-wavelength lasers that feed co-packaged optics, samples in 2027 and volume from 2028, per EU-Startups. Council's Chips Act 2.0 working party meets 29-30 Oct on compromise text 13545/26. Packaging and photonics should be on that table.

David Navrátil (Substack, 23 Oct) on where Czech AI adoption actually breaks: 54% of large Czech firms use AI but only 13% of small ones, per ČSÚ. Large Czech firms match the EU. Small ones make up almost the whole gap.
Why it matters: His numbers: a Czech mid-sized firm produces 74% of what a large one does per employee, versus 91% in Austria. Over the last three years Denmark put roughly 12 times more venture money into startups than Czechia relative to GDP, the US more than 40 times. His call: the returning EET receipt system brings maybe CZK 10-15bn a year, while closing the SME productivity gap is worth close to CZK 300bn of GDP. That is his estimate, not ours. The fix is capital and data, not more receipts.
