ctg. morning brief, 1 Nov 2026

On 1 Nov 2026, Rheinmetall handed the first series-production Caracal air assault vehicles to Germany and the Netherlands at its plant in Ede on 29 Oct. More than 1,500 are due by 2030, with 28 mission kits and 20 years of life-cycle support in the contract.

Why it matters: This is the part of rearmament nobody films: a light vehicle on a Mercedes-Benz G-Class military chassis, assembled in the Netherlands, now coming off a line instead of out of a prototype shop. Schakal orders from this week deliver in 2032 and 2033. Caracal is delivering now. Serial production lead.

European defence tech raised about €4.4bn in equity across 42 rounds in Q3 2026, and two of them, Helsing at €1.6bn and Quantum Systems at €1.1bn, took 60%, per Defense Valley News. The top five took 84%. The median disclosed round was €15m.

Why it matters: The headline number says boom. The distribution says two champions and a long tail of seed and Series A companies. The other 26 disclosed rounds added up to €717m, less than half of Helsing alone, and 61% of the money went to German companies. Edition candidate: who funds the company between a €15m round and a billion-euro one, and what happens to the ones nobody does.

Nvidia and PreussenElektra, the E.ON unit dismantling eight former German nuclear plants, will assess whether those sites can host AI data centres (reported 28 Oct). NDR names Unterweser, Grohnde and Stade among the Lower Saxony sites in the portfolio.

Why it matters: Germany shut its last reactors in April 2023 and kept the thing everyone now wants: big grid connections on land already zoned for heavy industry. Same lesson as Telehouse in London yesterday. No site, megawatt figure, investment or power source has been named, and dismantling runs into the 2030s at several sites, so this is a study, not a build.

Barcelona's Semidynamics and Nokia signed an MoU to test Semidynamics' RISC-V AI inference accelerators and liquid-cooled racks with Nokia's data centre networking (29 Oct).

Why it matters: A European chip and a European network vendor trying to sell one rack is the right shape for sovereign inference. It is an MoU to assess and validate, with no customer, volume or money attached. File it and check back when a rack ships.
