The ETH Spinout Factory
ETH Zurich's Robotic Systems Lab has produced ANYbotics, Wingtra, Bota Systems, and Verity. The AI Center spun out DeepJudge. Scandit came out of ETH computer science. Climeworks was founded by two ETH engineers. The conversion rate from ETH research to funded company is exceptional — and the Oerlikon cluster in the north of the city, where ANYbotics and Bota Systems sit 100 metres apart, shows how the lab ecosystem physically translates into a startup district.
Google's European Brain
Google's Brandschenkestrasse campus is the largest Google engineering office outside the US — thousands of engineers working on Search, Maps, hardware, and AI infrastructure. The presence of Google since 2004 created the talent retention loop that makes Zurich work: ETH graduates don't have to move to Mountain View, they can stay in Switzerland and work on the same problems. That loop produces the spinouts that appear on this map.
The Lakeside Finance Stack
Swiss Re operates the world's second-largest reinsurance business from Mythenquai on the lake shore. SIX Group runs the Swiss Stock Exchange and was one of the first regulated exchanges globally to launch a digital exchange (SDX) for tokenized assets. IBM Research Zurich has produced two Nobel Prizes in Physics. This is not fintech startup energy — it's institutional depth that no other European city can match outside of London. Zurich's finance infrastructure is load-bearing for the entire European financial system.
Quiet Unicorns
Scandit ($1B+ valuation) scans barcodes in Ikea warehouses. ANYbotics (~€200M raised) inspects BP oil rigs with a four-legged robot. Climeworks pulls CO₂ directly from the air in Iceland. On Running IPO'd on NYSE at a $3B valuation and is now at $15B market cap. These are not consumer glamour companies — they're product-first engineering firms that reached unicorn status by solving real industrial problems. Zurich doesn't do hype. It does product.
◆ ctg. take
Zurich is Europe's most quietly impressive tech city. No hype cycles, no growth-hacked consumer apps — just ETH spinning out world-class robotics and AI companies while Google keeps the talent in Switzerland. Every company here is built for correctness first. That's not boring — that's how you get Scandit, ANYbotics, and Climeworks in the same city. The Swiss are not trying to be Silicon Valley. They're building the infrastructure layer underneath it.
